Pointmaker Helps Surgeons Learn
The Pointmaker PVI-80D with LP-32 was used at the 4th International Pancreatic and Biliary Endoscopic Symposium earlier this year to help surgeons teach operation procedures to other sugeons. The annual conference is held at Torrance Memorial Medical Center in Torrance, CA. Don Van Buren, Supervisor of Media Services at the hospital, uses the Pointmaker in live-feed surgical telemedicine. Six composite cameras, including endoscopic, ultrasound, X-ray, and conventional studio cameras, were used to capture a live surgical procedure. Using a series of switchers and distribution amplifiers, these images and live audio were sent to an on-site conference cetner 1500ft away.
The moderating physician, equipped with a preview monitor within the O.R., used a light pen to draw over the surgical images. The images and drawings were displayed using two video projectors located in the conference center. Over 200 physicians from around the world attending the conference were able to view the live surgical procedure and interact verbally and visually in real-time with the surgeon. The presenter in the conference center used a digitizing tablet to respond to the moderating physician's markings. If the presenter wanted others to interact he could have added either the COMM-4 or the COMM-8 option to his Pointmaker, which would have enabled him to connect up to 10 digitizing tablets.
